On 25 September, Chinese company Xiaomi unveiled its newest phone – the Mi Mix Alpha, a controversial and amazing concept phone.
Xiao mi thinks differently
As Samsung and Huawei focus on their foldable smartphone, and others seek to hide the notch , Chinese company Xiaomi did something out of ordinary, a smart phone with a display wrap around the sides of the phone and extends the way to the back. There is only a narrow strip on the back where the camera is placed. Thus, it has a screen-to-body ratio of 180.6%, which is its defining characteristic.
Maybe Xiaomi is not the first one that brought up the idea, but definitely the first one finished. Actually there is few things that the extra back display can do. It keeps dormant most of the time, only if you flip the phone, it will light up and have shortcuts to most used apps.
But it helps a lot when you play selfie game. The rear camera become a front camera, which is a 108-megapixel shooter, when you turn the Mix Alpha around. Selfie is one of the reasons why the notch, you guys all hate, is still there. Xiaomi change the way to do that. You can see your face in the back display, no any notch but a more powerful camera.
Let us talk about the camera setup. One hundred. And eight. Megapixels. That is a big number, but doesn’t matter. What the really big thing is its 1/1.33″ censor. That is a huge leap from the 64MP sensor which is currently the highest in the industry. Xiaomi demoed an image taken by the camera and then showed that you can zoom in up to 8x without losing much detail. By the way, the image is a 40MB file.
It is undeniably striking, but not practical.
How many people will inspect a photo in 4x or 8x. To see wrinkles? No, we just wanna post photos to social platform. In this case, take an example, in Facebook’s own words, they “automatically resize and format your photos” so they can display properly on the site or in the apps. So when you upload the photo taken by Mi MIX Alpha, which is 40MB, Facebook will do some seriously aggressive optimizing! All the detail brought by the $2,810 smart phone will lost.
Ah, have I mentioned the price ever? Xiaomi says it’s already in “small-scale production” and that it will launch in December, though it is unclear whether it is available outside China. And the price is 19,999CNY, about 2,810USD. Ah, a striking number.
About the back display, honestly I don’t know what I can do with it. And before the surround-display becomes popular, there is few mobile app support it.
Lastly, what kind of case should I buy and from where. It costs me $2,810, I’d better use a case.
Mi 9 Pro 5G, not so conspicuous, but usefull.
Xiaomi also announced the Mi Pro 5G, which is probably one of the cheapest ( if not the cheapest) 5G flagships.Xiaomi made its fame for being an Apple clone, but this time Mi Pro 5G moves ahead.
Let’s see its key specification
- Qualcomm SDM855 Snapdragon 855 Plus
- 40W wired fast charging, 30W fast wireless charging capability, 10W wireless reverse charging
- 12GB RAM, 512GB storage
- 4,000mAh battery
- Android based MIUI 11*

Mi 9 pro is the world’s first phone with 30W fast wireless charging capability. That is much fast then iPhone 11 wired fast charging. Pretty cool, especially it supports 10W wireless reverse charging, and again it defeat iPhone 11 completely. The prices range from 3699CNY or about 520USD to 4299 CNY or about 605USD.
